The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
August Intoccia:
Type here: I have now read this book twice. Both times it was an enriching experience. I think it handles the issues of racism well and it doesn’t shy away from them or attempt to sugar coat it. There is a strong emphasis on community and finding yourself. I would recommend this to someone looking to find their voice.
Jaina:
This book gives a very interesting insight on how a young black girl navigates a negative situation, surrounding negativity around the color of her skin. It shines a light on this topic and shows how others can stand for what is right, and have their voices heard. I think is is a good story to encourage others to be who they are, always.
Sage Davis:
The Hate U Give is an amazing book. I love how it deals with the issues that black people face when dealing with cops. I think that having to put on a mask depending on who we’re with is an issue that we all face. I don’t think we’re really ever our true selves which is so sad. I think the fact that she encourages cutting off people that don’t fit into your beliefs or what you value is so important. There are too many toxic female friendships in the world, and if we could cut down on that, we would be invincible. The topic of interracial relationships comes into play in this book, and I think that’s another issue people face. How to manage those relationships and not offend the other person’s culture. Overall, I really like this book, I ended up reading the sequel book On The Come Up and that book was really good as well. I haven’t read the prequel yet.
