You’re six years old and you hear in the distance, a rumble, like the beating of drums. Your colored, rubber rain boots stick to your exposed skin, and your jacket is being hit by small pearls of rain. The sky is a dark grey, but a small peak of violent red in the west reminds you that it’s the evening. You waddle out, uncomfortably, but content. A puddle of rain is collecting on the sidewalk, and with a reassuring nod from the one watching you, you push off the ground and land in the water with a big “SPLASH”. Well, not that big, but every hop gives you more confidence, and soon you’re leaping from puddle to puddle, laughing, and ignoring your soaked socks.
Now you’re a little bit older, too old to go outside in the rain, and instead watch it from the comfort of your home. The rain pour is muffled by the walls of your home, but there is still a faint splattering noise. You’re curled up in an armchair, with either a book or electronic in your hand. You watch as the neighbor’s kid goes out to splash in the puddles, dresses up in rainboots a size to big, and a big rubber jacket. Their face is shadowed by a big brimmed hat, made from the same material as the jacket, and you hear a faint cry of their excited screams.
Rain is beautiful – it’s a work of art. Not only has it captivated humans for centuries, but the benefits it brings makes the phenomenon all the more special. You may have noticed rain rolling down your window, or the damp soil afterwards, maybe even seen some plants shoot up after even a light drizzle. For some even to this day, rain is their source of drinking water, or what they use to clean their dishes or do their laundry. For animals it means fresh drinking water, relieves them from heat, or even signals when they should migrate.
Rain has so many noticable benefits that we can spot with the naked eye. But rain helps us more then just watering the flowers, it’s benefit to our atmospher and even mental health is something worth noticing.
Imagine your a (bare with me here) pollution particle, maybe some smoke from a factory, or pollen from the spring. Your floating around, causing irritation to all the little people down on earth, but then suddenly, powerful rain droplets come crashing down, catching you, a piece or dust, or pollen, and carrying you down to the ground. Yes! Rain actually “cleans” our atmosphere, a process called “wet deposition”. As droplets fall through layers of air, they pick up airborne particles and carry them to the ground, effectively “scrubbing” the sky. Afterwards, people with asthma, allergies, or other respitory may find relief, because the air experienced something similar to a shower.
Not only does the rain “clean” the air, it also replenishs our water sources
