Heaven by Mieko Kawakami
Following the troubling story of a middle school boy searching for answers as to why he was chosen by his classmates to be a victim of horrendous bullying, the novel was very powerful.

The structure of the book was beautiful to begin with. Although it was short, the content made it a difficult read. While reading, I found myself continuously wanting to help the unnamed narrator. Some characters tried to justify their cruel treatment of the boy, but none of the justifications were reasonable in any way. It goes to show that there are no justifications for bullying. Overall, the ability of Kawakami to create complex characters and tell such an emotional story in so few pages makes me appreciate her storytelling even more.
