Qualities to consider when choosing the college for you

girls in college

I’m currently a senior in high school trying to navigate the college application process. Deciding what schools to apply to is pretty challenging since there are so many factors to consider. Thankfully, there are ways to narrow down the possibilities, making the process of choosing the college for you far easier. These are some categories that helped me narrow my list of colleges.

Size of the Student Body
What is your preference when it comes to the size of a college? Larger schools usually offer more resources and activities, whereas smaller schools better provide a tight-knit community where it’s easier to get to know your teachers and peers. The size of a university can really shape your experience, and it’s been an important factor for me as I’ve been deciding where to apply.

Dorms
How are the dorms? When I tour colleges, I often ask about air conditioning, the number of roommates, the social environment, etc. Looking at the condition of the dorms and whether they have access to a kitchen and study lounges is important depending on what you prefer. I always keep in mind the size of the room since it will likely be shared with a roommate.

Safety
Feeling safe is super important, whether on or near campus. A lot of schools have systems that provide rides to students late at night if they ever feel unsafe or need someone to accompany them. I would definitely look for schools located in safe areas with quality security services and a safe community.

Liberal Arts or STEM?
It is essential to consider what kind of education you want, because it will help you when looking for programs or services. Schools that focus on STEM will have more resources in labs and internships. For those who want a broader exploration of many disciplines, a liberal arts school can be a great choice. I would like to pursue a career in pharmacy, so finding schools that either have postgraduate pharmacy schools or are near other pharmacy schools is a priority for me. Be sure to research schools’ available majors if you have a specific one in mind. This can be essential to keep in mind when choosing the college for you.

Greek Life
Are you interested in joining a sorority or fraternity, or would you rather stay away from schools with Greek life? While some students might be drawn to colleges with vibrant Greek communities, these schools may not be for everyone. Personally, I would like to go to a college that focuses more on clubs and organizations without the Greek scene.

Diversity
Another important factor when considering colleges is the diversity! A diverse campus can enrich your experience and expose you to different cultures and ideas. I researched the demographics of the colleges and looked at the student body of the schools I toured. Having a welcoming and hospitable environment may promote special relationships and a social scene with a broader scope.

Location
Location can be one of the most important factors to consider when choosing the college for you. Where your school is located will impact your experience, so definitely consider the area that you would like to be in. Certain factors such as networking, internships, cultural activities, and job opportunities may be more or less accessible in different areas. Also, do you prefer a city environment, a quiet setting, or a combination of the two? Personally, I would love to be in a bustling environment with a lively social scene.

Sports
If you enjoy watching or playing sports, definitely consider the sports culture at the school.
I would also look for intramural sports or any fitness classes that may be provided like yoga or pilates. A vibrant sports scene can enhance school spirit and give you a strong sense of community!

Dining hall food
Good dining hall food can make a huge difference in your college experience! Visiting campus or hearing from current students is a really good way to get an idea of your options. When I toured some schools, I made sure to take note of the different meal plans as well as the variety of healthy foods.

Financial aid
Last but certainly not least, it can be crucial to consider financial aid when deciding where to apply. Money is a huge component that can determine your decision. I looked at schools that are 100% need-based, as well as scholarships, grants, and work study opportunities to ease the financial burden on my parents. Understanding the cost of attending is really helpful to find a college that fits your budget without too much debt.

A Final Note
Note that these are only some factors to take into consideration when choosing the college for you. There are several other factors as well, but these are the main elements that helped me decide which colleges to apply for. Take your time to research schools and do what feels right for you! Thanks for taking the time to read this, and good luck on the rest of your college app journey!
